Self protective measures to be introduced to people in the Deep South
In light of the seemingly endless violence against officials and civilians alike by militants, the Central Investigation Bureau has commissioned a study of terrorist acts which occurred in many hot spots in the world and has come up with a list of "Do" and "Don’ts" called "self-protective measures" for people in the restive Deep South.
The self-protective measures have been introduced for practice to policemen at the sixth subdivision of the Crime Suppression Division which is responsible for peace and order in the three southernmost provinces. The measures will soon be introduced to officials and civilians, especially those in the vulnerable areas.
The key element of the self protective measures is "Don’t make it easy targets".
The measures are as follows:
- Overcome routines.
- Vary routes and times to and from work.
- Exercise (jog) on different routes/times and don’t exercise alone.
- Vary times/places for shopping, lunch and other appointments.
- Enter/exit buildings through different doors.
- Don’t divulge personal/family information to strangers.
- Be prepared for unexpected event.
- Maintain a low profile.
- Dress/behave in public consistent with local customs. Avoid wearing uniform, clothing with flags, logos and etc.
- No department related sticker, decals, logos on luggage, briefcases, shopping bags and etc.
- Unless necessary, don’t wear uniform or military items in public.
- Shun publicity.
- Be alert for surveillance attempts, suspicious persons or activities and report them to proper authorities.
- Be alert to, and aware of changes in the security atmosphere.
Pol Colonel Songrak Khunsri, deputy superintendent of the 6th subdivision of the CSD, who conducted the study said that the most important element in the battle against terrorism acts was not to win the battle but to ensure safety for the people.
